Featuring Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol, piano, oud, ney (end-blown flute), voice
Borders and boundaries excite the imagination and spur us to envision what might lie beyond them. From Rameau’s exoticised “Les Indes Galantes” to Vivier’s prismatic depiction of Japan, these musical imaginings are as fantastical as they are fascinating. We're proud to present the world premiere of “A Gentleman of Istanbul” in which Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol looks back to a seventeenth-century Ottoman world traveler, Evliya Çelebi, in order to reflect on the cosmopolitan identity of this Muslim adventurer through a wide array of musical styles.
