Criers Move into Storefront Home

AFC Space Yesterday morning, the Criers met together at our new home on South Street in Jamaica Plain for our first rehearsals of Folklore. The energy was strong and spirits high as we played our first notes in the 800-square-foot storefront that will serve as A Far Cry's rehearsal and collaborative arts home. In addition to the upstairs area, there is an 800-square-foot office space, storage space, and music library/archive in the basement that will serve as the home of A Far Cry's day-to-day, non-profit operational activities.

Brainstorming has reached fever pitch among the Criers concerning what other uses the upstairs storefront might have. Some ideas presented so far include open rehearsals, an instrument "petting zoo" for kids, chamber music and jazz jam session evenings, intimate family concerts, a weeklong festival to celebrate the arts in Jamaica Plain, collaboration with local visual artists, guest speakers, a video showcase, art exhibits, and many, many more ideas!

Additionally, we are asking our fans and supporters to please consider helping us by donating furniture/supplies that we need to properly set up the space. The short list of things that we are most in need of are:

- a well-functioning computer: desktop -or- laptop  DONATED! - computer monitor: large enough for graphic design work - a baby grand (or larger) piano - a file cabinet - area rugs for upstairs rehearsal space and downstairs office space

Are you looking to donate any of these items to an active, non-profit arts group? If so, please contact Margaret Dyer (our Operations chair) directly at margaret@afarcry.org or call us at 617.297.2796 (office).

501(c)(3) non-profit!

A Far Cry received amazing news last week. The IRS (how often do you get good news from the IRS?) notified us that our application for tax-exempt status has been approved! A Far Cry, Inc. is now exempt from Federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the tax code. We are officially a non-profit corporation. We need to first thank the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts of Massachusetts (www.vlama.org) who approved our application for reduced-cost legal assistance, and for our incredible team at Ropes and Gray (www.ropesgray.com) who have shepherded us through the complicated process of obtaining tax exemption.

There are lots of reasons this is an important milestone for A Far Cry. Donations made to A Far Cry are now 100% tax-deductible. A whole world of grants available only to non-profits is now open to us. Most importantly of all, A Far Cry's mission - to spread light and joy in the world through incredible performances of incredible music - has gained in stature. No longer are we a rag-tag band of musicians who play together for the sheer love of it; now we have a higher responsibility to the public and to the world to carry on. Fundraising

It's a bit unfortunate, in a way, that the second post in the history of the blog must have the title it does. Symbolically, the music comes first, as it always does in real life. Following close behind, however, comes concerns about money. A Far Cry exists for a number of reasons. It exists to show the world a new kind of music-making. It exists to demonstrate the power of collaboration and the power of real, profound communication. The musicians of A Far Cry are, for the time being, donating literally thousands of hours and thousands of dollars to help get this thing off the ground. But boy, we could use a little help. There are serious expenses associated with even our modest three-concert inaugural series: music rental, hall rental, and transportation, and we are also facing significant start-up costs in terms of incorporation fees, legal fees, demo recording fees, and dozens of other little things. To get to the point, we aim to perform for all people, no matter their socio-economic situation, but if you have heard us, and if you support the idea behind this endeavor, and you can spare a couple bucks, please give some consideration to becoming a supporter of A Far Cry, and a supporter of the next generation of superb uplifting cultural experience. It's easy - you can donate securely by web by clicking below, or to the right.
