Sojourner Truth used the phrase “Ain’t I a Woman?” in her famous 1851 speech at the Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, OH. As one of the central voices in the abolitionist movement, Truth’s question has, for generations, served as a sounding horn in the advocacy of rights and political equality of all women. Her legacy inspires this program which is a meditation - literally and figuratively - on the strength of women. From a German medieval saint, to a Venezuelan Romantic, to a young Indian-American who melds musical cultures, Ain’t I A Woman calls on the deep well of ingenuity, wisdom, and grit of women across time and around the globe as portrayed by five extraordinary female composers. Over the arc of this musical journey, a quiet and confident energy builds until it finally erupts into an ecstatic and joyful celebration.
Tune in before the show at 7:30pm for a pre-concert interview with Meredith Bergmann, the sculptor behind the Boston Women's Memorial located on Commonwealth Avenue. Photographs of Bergmann's sculptures will be displayed between musical works as a further homage to all of the women from across history whose resilience has laid the foundation we stand on today.
