Firefly

  • NEC's Jordan Hall 30 Gainsborough Street Boston, MA, 02115 United States (map)

PLEASE NOTE: A Far Cry is planning to move forward with tonight's performance for both in-person and online audiences. However, we know that safety comes first, and in light of the snow, we want to make sure you are aware of the online ticket option for Firefly. Please contact us at boxoffice@afarcry.org if you would like to exchange your in-person tickets for virtual ones.

Firefly explores the concepts of permanence and impermanence, of the fleeting and the eternal that is at the heart of music: in its creation, its legacy, its canonization (or neglect); in the way we experience it as performers and audience members; and in the shadows it casts in our memories. From Bunch’s rapturous Nocturne, to the joyful tumult of Erkin’s Sinfonietta by way of Bridge’s gently playful Suite, and concluding with the gorgeous fragility of Lekeu’s Adagio, this program juxtaposes four pieces that, largely unknown, are each distinctly emblematic of recognizable times and places, but whose resonances are timeless.

Musical Program

Kenji Bunch | Nocturne

Frank Bridge | Suite for String Orchestra, H.93

Ulvi Cemal Erkin | Sinfonietta for String Orchestra

Guillaume Lekeu | Adagio pour quatuor d’orchestre

I dreamt up Firefly in December of 2020, when A Far Cry had produced a couple of chamber music concerts but the thought of bringing the whole group together for a full ensemble concert was still very much an uncertainty. During the most difficult days of the pandemic, this is the music I needed to hear.
