Chamber Music with the Criers
The extra power and richness of a sextet can inspire composers to some of their most impassioned writing, and that is certainly the case in this compact program where Schulhoff and Schoenberg mirror each other. Schoenberg’s “Verklärte Nacht” is a taut psychological drama, a story about experiencing and overcoming fear. Schulhoff’s rarely played sextet (performed in 1924, published in 1978!) is an explosion of intensity that just has to be heard.
