This program is about the cherished moments composers spend with friends, colleagues, and mentors. Inspired by our February concert, “Unrequited,” “Dear Friend” draws on the intimate format of chamber music to uncover connections between composers across generations and perspectives.
“As concertgoers, we often experience music as performances of transcendent works created in a vacuum. This program highlights the way composers such as Johannes Brahms, Joseph Joachim, and Clara Schumann, as well as Steven Stucky and Kaija Saariaho, composed their most intimate music for their friends, colleagues, and lovers, many of whom were also famous musicians and composers.”
