Suite of Mexican Pop, Folk, and Mariachi Music, arr. Alex Fortes

A journey into the rich musical culture of our next-door neighbor, “México Lindo y Querido” shows the breadth and beauty of Mexican musical culture across centuries. Meet early Baroque and Renaissance composers who were creating art in Mexico in the early 1600s, zoom forward to the Twentieth Century, and be transported by a suite of Pop, Folk, and Mariachi music; a cornucopia of styles made even more brilliant by the incredible soprano Estelí Gomez.

Mexico recognizes almost 70 national languages, was colonized by three European powers, lost half of its territory around 1850 to the US, and thrived as an international center of modernism. The musical culture that blossomed around this history is incredibly rich, and this program only begins to scratch the surface.
