Criers Move into Storefront Home
Yesterday morning, the Criers met together at our new home on South Street in Jamaica Plain for our first rehearsals of Folklore. The energy was strong and spirits high as we played our first notes in the 800-square-foot storefront that will serve as A Far Cry's rehearsal and collaborative arts home. In addition to the upstairs area, there is an 800-square-foot office space, storage space, and music library/archive in the basement that will serve as the home of A Far Cry's day-to-day, non-profit operational activities.
Brainstorming has reached fever pitch among the Criers concerning what other uses the upstairs storefront might have. Some ideas presented so far include open rehearsals, an instrument "petting zoo" for kids, chamber music and jazz jam session evenings, intimate family concerts, a weeklong festival to celebrate the arts in Jamaica Plain, collaboration with local visual artists, guest speakers, a video showcase, art exhibits, and many, many more ideas!
Additionally, we are asking our fans and supporters to please consider helping us by donating furniture/supplies that we need to properly set up the space. The short list of things that we are most in need of are:
- a well-functioning computer: desktop -or- laptop DONATED!
- computer monitor: large enough for graphic design work
- a baby grand (or larger) piano
- a file cabinet
- area rugs for upstairs rehearsal space and downstairs office space

A Far Cry Debut Album On The Way
For those of you missing A Far Cry’s sound between concert cycles, I have good news for you. We are in the midst of producing our Debut Album! This recording project was one that we started in the fall. In addition to meeting as a group to decide on repertoire, and spending many rehearsal hours getting to a place of confidence in order to engrave our sounds in the universe forever, there were lots of decisions to be made that would affect both the experience and the results of our labor. We needed to find the perfect recording space (Mechanics Hall, in Worcester, MA), an engineer (Jesse Lewis of Sound Mirror) and a couple of producers- musicians that we trusted and respected to be our outside ears through the recording process (violist Roger Tapping, and cellist Terry King).
Things fell into place rather miraculously, and the morning after we returned from our trip to Duluth, MN, we woke up early and headed over to Mechanics Hall to begin three days of recording. Thanks to our wonderful engineer Jesse, and our esteemed producers Roger and Terry, things seemed to go quite smoothly.
Those of you that have recorded know, and even those of you that haven’t can imagine what a difficult task it is! Every take could be "the one,” and if you miss a note, or someone sneezes, what might have otherwise been a perfect take goes in the garbage!
The other thing about studio recording is that there is no audience. While this improves our chances of a “clean” recording – no candy wrappers or coughs from the crowd, it also changes the feel of the music. I mean, if a tree falls in the forest….
But we did our best to imagine you there right along side us, and we’re eagerly awaiting our first listen. Jesse is busy editing, we’ll listen in a few weeks, and we should have our discs available for you by the time April rolls around. The album includes works by Handel, Golijov and Tchaikovsky. It is with a heavy heart that we must announce that Andrew Eng has decided to step down from A Far Cry. We will miss Andrew's dry Canadian humor, his relaxed and easygoing attitude, and most of all his tremendous fiddle playing. A sad day indeed - we will miss you dearly, Andrew.

Warm wishes to everyone wherever you are spending the holidays! I am in snowy Boston, not snowed in, but snowed out of Portland, OR, where I was trying to fly yesterday. I'm hoping to make it home by Christmas Day. Two nights ago Karl and I spent the first night of Hannukah at our friends Michal and Jonas' house where they lit the candle and sang with Michal's family in Mexico via Skype. It was so fun to be part of something that spanned a distance that big but felt very warm and close.
I hope everyone in our extended Far Cry family can be somewhere special to each person, whether it's Boston, Florida, Seattle, Vermont, Israel, Japan or New York City. Merry Christmas with love!

Criers at the Axiom Gallery Thursday
A Far Cry has just confirmed with Heidi Kayser (Director at the Axiom Gallery, which is an art gallery that is adjacently attached to the Green Street T-station) for Sharon, Courtenay and I (Jae) to play there free for all commuters & bystanders from 5:15pm-6:00pm tomorrow. It is to mainly advertise for our benefit concert on the 7th of November to help Bike Not Bombs and Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC), two outstanding non-profits we're partnering with to further our case in creating social harmony, right here in JP! First times
It's safe to say that A Far Cry is a nocturnal set. Most performing artists are, and after a performance there's remaining adrenaline to expend, celebrating, discussion, winding down to do. And this becomes our normal pattern of life. So having a 9 am rehearsal to get ready for can be tough on any day. I have to get up early enough to warm up my muscles, eat a substantial meal...well, it's not quite as intense as Michael Phelps getting up at 5 am for his 9 am practice sessions, but there are parallels. And tomorrow morning we have our first Open Rehearsal... We've talked about doing this for a while, letting the public in to see how we work on honing our ensemble playing, but doing it is another thing, and I do wish it didn't have to be first thing in the morning! We had a planning session today to decide what to work on, and how to make it accessible and interesting for an audience, while still maximizing the time because we need all the minutes we can get for our concert in the evening. We reminded each other to basically do all the things we say we want to do...work on specific ideas and define our collective decisions before moving on, speak clearly and loudly, encourage each other to try crazy and unusual possibilities, etc. So I think the open rehearsal could prove to be one of our most useful tools, crystallizing our energy and use of time in a way that will help all of our rehearsing. But it's a little like inviting a reporter to your quirky family's Fourth of July BBQ and telling your crazy aunts and uncles and cousins to be themselves, just the best versions...it should be fun and who knows what will come out of the mix and across to everyone.
