Farmers Market Concert

Yesterday morning I experienced one of the most enjoyable playing experiences I have ever had. When Jason asked us on Friday night, in the midst of partying after our second concert, to leave towards VT at 9 am the next morning, we were all not quite sure what in the world he was thinking... Demanding a good reason, together with making upset faces, the room quieted down as Jason said- 'Jesse will explain'...

The car I was in was the last one to arrive (not at all surprising, since I am well known for being chronically late... three alarm clocks were apparently not enough...). As we walked through Montpelier's Saturday morning farmer's market looking for our friends, taking in the fresh air and feeling a bit like foreigners on vacation, I suddenly saw a large crowd surrounding a bunch of happy string players. As quickly as I could I took my violin out and ran over to my section, to join a beautifully improvised "Canon" by Pachabel with my sunglasses on. What an exciting moment- improvising with my friends on the driveway in the sun, surrounded by music lovers of all ages, children and young couples, as well as their grandparents, all together smiling at the sight of such energy, vitality and inspiration coming from both sides. Leaving at 9 am was such a small price for such an unforgettable street concert!

We as musicians always try to find new ways to make classical music accessible for people of all ages and backgrounds, and I think we have found one of the many ways to do so. Not to mention, a way to find an audience in the morning for an evening concert!

Deep sigh

Well that's that! Our first concert series is behind us. What a time. I think we performed with joy, and I think the audiences responded in kind. After a crazy, wonderful time in Vermont, we're all back in the city, and I doubt I'm the only crier who feels both exhausted and eager for more. Performing with the Criers is an indescribable pleasure, and I for one wish our next concerts didn't have to wait until after the summer.

Energy for Concert # 2

I am so excited for our second concert tonight at St. Paul's in my own neighborhood of Brookline! There was a very specific "first concert" energy for Wednesday night, and since then I think we've all relaxed a little, and today the energy is building for a really no-holds-barred kind of concert. I think we have some extra confidence, and we know for a fact now that our excitement does indeed transfer to the audience, so we'll see what we can do with that tonight. Andrew sent us all MP3 files of the pieces from Wednesday, and that definitely gave me warm fuzzies AND primed me for even better things to come out of our 16-person instrument tonight. See you THERE! -Megsta

Our First Concert is TONIGHT!!!

Dearest Friends, We're running around the city getting all the last-minute details in order for our first public concert tonight in Cambridge at University Lutheran (UniLu).

Hope to see as many of you there as can come!

I just spoke with Sharon, and there promises to be a wonderful reception afterwards as well...

Last-minute adjustments

Ash, Court, Jase, and I are hanging out in Brighton, putting together concert programs, editing bios, and composing the letter of introduction to our concerts. WHICH START TOMORROW! We really really can't wait until we're performing - everything in the last four months has been building up to these concerts. Our dress rehearsal tonight was a challenge in many ways. Even concepts as simple as quiet and loud seemed to take on new meaning and shape. It will be such a relief to finally be performing for people, touching lives - all of our hard work finally coming to fruition!

Karl's recital

Our incomparable bassist Karl Doty gave what was undoubtedly a spectacular recital at NEC tonight! I couldn't make it because of mountains of end-of-year classwork - so frustrating! Luckily I get to hear him in rehearsal almost every day, not to mention late at night in the NEC basement by my locker. Often, bass players tend to recede into the background musically - always present, but never attention grabbing. Not so our awesome bass section! Bravo, Karl. Jesse
